Inspirations: Breaking down The Graffiti Skull Art Print
When dreaming up the Overnight Angels Crew collection, Rick and Scott had a shared goal: to revive classic rock in a new and contemporary light. From Rick, we see the influence of a life on the stage; from Scott, the lens of urban street style. Both spheres, though born from completely differing cultures, share a credence to bold graphics and typography.
The Skull
Enter the skull print. If there's one icon that encapsulates the Overnight Angels Crew, it's the Skull. A powerful motif throughout rock history, the use of the skull finds it roots in Mexican folklore, as an image of duality – at once a symbol of death and that which remains, of life and the afterlife. Called 'Calavera', the artistic representation of skulls, to sport skull iconography in any form shows a sense of bravery, and the acceptance of death as a part of life.
The Graffiti
The skull graphic has the 'sprayed-on' effect of stencil graffiti art. A popular format with many a graffiti artist (you might have heard of Banksy), the stencil allows for a precise design, while maintaining the rough texture of spray paint. It forms a particularly powerful image when used in monochromatic design.
Hand-signed by Sav, Hand-finished by Scott
The print finds it's one-of-a-kind nature in its final elements. Each piece has an Embossed OAC cherub adding an element of 3D to the poster, as well as being individually numbered, so you know exactly what print of the limited run you have.
Rick took the time to sign each of the prints in a feature colour (gold for the black and red run, blue for the white and red run), telling us 'It's my pleasure to put my name to these art prints; they're the culmination of the hard work of my son and the OAC team, and my love for the fans who've followed me on my journey.' For the finishing touches, Scott sealed each print with a flash of graffiti, right across the eyes of each skull. No two prints are the same.
